Slanderers

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Raag Bhairo, penned by 5th Guru.

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਉ ਫਿਟਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

The world curses the slanderer,

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥

Deceptive are their ways, an ill demeanor.

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥

Slanderer’s tainted lifestyle, polluted and impure,

ਦਾਸ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

But the Lord, the savior, for slaves, protects and ensures.

ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਮੁਆ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

The slander dies, entwined with the slanderer’s fate,

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕੜਕਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Creator Beyond, the Transcendent Lord, protects servants, death thunders over the head of the slanderers, sealing their state||1||Pause||

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

No belief in slanderers’ sayings, 

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੇ ॥

Slanderers, regret and repent, after lying..

ਹਾਥ ਪਛੋਰਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰਨਿ ਲਗਾਹਿ ॥

He wrings his hands, and hits his head against the ground.

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਉ ਦਈ ਛੋਡੈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

The Lord does not forgive, no solace found. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਮਾਗੈ ॥

The Lord’s servant harbors no ill will,

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਉ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਂਗੈ ॥

While the slanderer suffers, pierced, wounded and ill.

ਬਗੁਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਰਹਿਆ ਪੰਖ ਪਸਾਰਿ ॥

Like a crane, he spreads his feathers, to imitate swan.

ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਢਿਆ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

Speaking from mouth, his thoughts came out ||3||

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

The Creator-Lord is the inner-knower.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

That person, whom the Lord makes His Own, becomes stable and steady.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

The Lord’s slave is true in the Court of the Lord.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੪੧॥੫੪॥

Servant Nanak speaks, after contemplating the essence of reality. ||4||41||54||

Enshrining the Lord within the mind is to tell the beads of rosary. 

ਗੂਜਰੀ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One God, permeating all. By True Guru’s grace, He is obtained.

ਏਕ ਨਗਰੀ ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਬਸੀਅਲੇ ਬਰਜਤ ਚੋਰੀ ਧਾਵੈ ॥

In the town (of body) dwell the five thieves, and though stopped they still go out stealing.

ਤ੍ਰਿਹਦਸ ਮਾਲ ਰਖੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

He who keeps his capital safe from three modes and ten passions obtains salvation and emancipation, O Nanak.

ਚੇਤਹੁ ਬਾਸੁਦੇਉ ਬਨਵਾਲੀ ॥

Meditate thou on the Omnipresent Lord the wearer of the garland of jungles.

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The black-bee has spoiled the flower and fish the water.

ਮਾਈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਹਾ ਲੈ ਚਰਾਵਉ ॥

O Mother, wherefrom shall I find anything to offer for Lord’s worship.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਫੂਲੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

I cannot find other beautiful flowers which have not been defiled. Pause.

ਮੈਲਾਗਰ ਬੇਰ੍ਹੇ ਹੈ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ॥

The serpents twine around the sandal tree.

ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਸਹਿ ਇਕ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੨॥

Poison and Nectar dwell together.

ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਨਈਬੇਦਹਿ ਬਾਸਾ ॥

With incense, lamps, victuals and scents,

ਕੈਸੇ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੩॥

how can Thine slaves perform Thy worship?

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪਉ ਪੂਜ ਚਰਾਵਉ ॥

I dedicate and offer my body and soul as my worship.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੪॥

By Guru’s grace, I attain to the Immaculate Lord.

ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਆਹਿ ਨ ਤੋਰੀ ॥

I have not performed Thine worship and done flower adoration.

ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਕਵਨ ਗਤਿ ਮੋਰੀ ॥੫॥੧॥

Says Ravidass, I Know not what shall be my condition, hereafter?

O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your True Beloved, who shall approve and reward you for all your efforts.

ਰਾਗੁ ਗੋਂਡ ਚਉਪਦੇ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥

ਜੇ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਰਖਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਤਾ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਈ ॥

If hopes in Lord are in the (our) mind, (we shall) get many fruits of (our) desires.

ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜੋ ਜੀਇ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਘਾਲਿਆ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

Lord knows all in our mind, not even an iota of (our) effort goes to waste.

ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕੀਜੈ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

O my mind, keep your hopes in Lord, the Master is pervading all.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥

O my mind, keep your hopes in the Lord of the World, the Master of the senses.

ਜੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਅਵਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਾ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਆਸ ਸਭ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Why hope in anything other than Lord – that hope is fruitless and totally useless.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਭੁ ਮਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਲਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

What you see is Maya, affection and attachment to family –  don’t waste your life by placing hope in them.

ਇਨੑ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਹਿ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਇਨੑ ਕਾ ਵਾਹਿਆ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

Nothing is in their hands; what can these poor beings do? Nothing can be done by their actions.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਤੁਝੁ ਤਾਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਡਾਈ ॥੨॥

O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your Beloved, who shall carry you across, and save your whole family as well. 

ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਸ ਅਵਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਮਿਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਤ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਆਈ ॥

If you place your hopes in any other, in any friend other than the Lord, then you shall come to know that it is of no use at all.

ਇਹ ਆਸ ਪਰਮਿਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਸਭ ਜਾਈ ॥

This hope placed in other friends comes from the love of duality. In an instant, it is gone; it is totally false.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your True Beloved, who shall approve and reward you for all your efforts. ||3||

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਤੂ ਆਸਕਰਾਵਹਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਕੋ ਆਸ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

Hope and desire are all Yours, O my Lord and Master. As You inspire hope, so are the hopes held.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਤੂ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥

You alone know the hope of servant Nanak, O Lord; gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord, he is satisfied. ||4||1||

 ਬਸੰਤੁ  ਚੜਿਆ  ਫੂਲੀ  ਬਨਰਾਇ   

Spring came, vegetation flourishes.

 ਏਹਿ  ਜੀਅ  ਜੰਤ  ਫੂਲਹਿ  ਹਰਿ  ਚਿਤੁ  ਲਾਇ  ੧॥ 

Similarly these sentient beings bloom, contemplating the Lord. 

 ਇਨ  ਬਿਧਿ  ਇਹੁ  ਮਨੁ  ਹਰਿਆ  ਹੋਇ   

This is the way, this mind becomes alive.

 ਹਰਿ  ਹਰਿ  ਨਾਮੁ  ਜਪੈ  ਦਿਨੁ  ਰਾਤੀ  ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ  ਹਉਮੈ  ਕਢੈ  ਧੋਇ  ੧॥  ਰਹਾਉ   

Meditating on Lord’s Naam day and night, follower of the Guru removes and washes off self-conceit.

 ਸਤਿਗੁਰ  ਬਾਣੀ  ਸਬਦੁ  ਸੁਣਾਏ   

True Guru’s uttering says God’s Word

 ਇਹੁ  ਜਗੁ  ਹਰਿਆ  ਸਤਿਗੁਰ  ਭਾਏ  ੨॥ 

This world flowers with love, from the True Guru.

 ਫਲ  ਫੂਲ  ਲਾਗੇ  ਜਾਂ  ਆਪੇ  ਲਾਏ   

The mortal flowers and fruitions, when the Lord, of Himself, so wills.

 ਮੂਲਿ  ਲਗੈ  ਤਾਂ  ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ  ਪਾਏ  ੩॥ 

Finding the True Guru, (we) meet the root (of all).

 ਆਪਿ  ਬਸੰਤੁ  ਜਗਤੁ  ਸਭੁ  ਵਾੜੀ   

He, Himself, is like Spring season and world is the garden.

 ਨਾਨਕ  ਪੂਰੈ  ਭਾਗਿ  ਭਗਤਿ  ਨਿਰਾਲੀ  ੪॥੫॥੧੭॥ 

Nanak, by perfect good fortune, (we) worship Him only.

The perverse person practises deeds of pride and he earns nothing but pain over pain.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩॥ Slok Third Guru.

ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ॥

Worship thou the bright Lord with the Guru-given mental equipoise.

ਆਤਮੇ ਨੋ ਆਤਮੇ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਾਇ॥

If the individual soul has faith in the supreme soul, it shall then obtain Divine knowledge within it’s home.

ਆਤਮਾ ਅਡੋਲੁ ਨ ਡੋਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਇ॥

Like the Guru’s natural inclination, the soul then becomes steady, and wavers not.

ਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ॥

Without the Guru, peace is not obtained and the filth of greed departs not from within.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ॥

If God’s Name dwells in the mind even for an instant and a movement, it includes bathing at all the sixty-eight place of pilgrimage.

ਸਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ॥

To the True, filth attaches not. Impurity attaches to him who harbours love for duality.

ਧੋਤੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ॥

By washing, it never departs though one may have ablutions at sixty-eight shrines.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਇ॥

The perverse person practises deeds of pride and he earns nothing but pain over pain.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ॥੧॥

Nanak, only then, the dirty one becomes neat and tidy, when he merges in the True Guru.

True is the glory and praise of the True One

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pauri.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਭਿਜੈ ॥

True is the glory and praise of the True One, does whose mind is imbued. 

ਜਿਨੀ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕੰਧੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਛਿਜੈ ॥

They, who single mindedly remembers the One, their bodies never perish.

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਿਜੈ ॥

Blessed blessed and praiseworthy is the person who with his tongue tastes the True Name Nectar.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਸੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਿਜੈ ॥

The man to whose mind the Truest of the true is pleasing becomes acceptable in the True court.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਚਿਆਰੀਆ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਿਜੈ ॥੨੦॥

Hail hail unto the birth of the true persons, whose faces the True Lord renders bright.
